Tutoring an Infant to Develop into an 'English Gentleman' β Does It Justify the Money?
"Parents based in North London seeks an extraordinary and qualified educator to guide their youngest child on his initial journey to turning into an English gentleman."
Upon seeing this post, you might easily overlook the wording "beginning" as just an expression.
Yet, it could be the most important part of this unusual employment listing, as it attempts to recruit a tutor for a 12-month-old.
Hundreds of responses have already been submitted since the anonymous family advertised their call for the highly paid tutor, who has to be "someone very special".
In recent few weeks, the post has gained attention throughout the media, with many wondering why?
Innovative Idea
A tutoring expert, head and founder of Tutors International, which is supporting the family in their hunt, stated that in spite of early doubt, he viewed the plan "forward-looking", and "innovative".
When he met the family, he said they appreciated the atypical character of their demand, and how young their son is.
Nevertheless, they clarified that they "were unwilling to delay any longer" to engage a tutor, as they had waited until their firstborn was five, and by that age "cultural bias had already set in".
But what does the family mean by "cultural predisposition"?
It's "comprehensive", the expert replied. "The manner you eat, how you speak".
He stated the firstborn had picked up "really subtle, unspoken signals" from the family, and had adopted their cultural norms. The family explained to him they did not want history to repeat itself with their new baby.
The intention: To hire a UK tutor, who needs to speak with RP, to shape the baby from day one.
Natural Absorption
"Much of the learning at the start here is rather osmotic," explained the CEO.
It's by means of this osmosis that the family are aiming the child will pick up the English characteristics they want to instil.
He noted the tutor needed to be someone who went to "prestigious academies β similar types of schools as the family hope to send their son to".
"The educator must be the suitable individual, they'll be carrying out things they aren't even aware they're doing, effortlessly," he commented.
Cost Not Relevant
The family informed him the selected educator should preferably also have knowledge of or enthusiasm in equestrian activities, skiing, creative fields and musical activities so as to influence the child in a diverse set of interests.
More than that though, he said the family desired the tutor to sign up the child on a range of classes so the child would be "equestrian training and learning an instrument by the time they are around three years old".
In the family's view, helping their son develop into a "British gentleman" will bring about success and create opportunities.
"Taking into account the advantages and disadvantages of that, because it's undoubtedly a class statement," he notes.
However, notwithstanding all this instruction in "Britishness", could the child pick up so-called cultural influence from the multicultural family he lives with anyway?
"Yes", said he. "The parents know this might not succeed, but they've simply adopted the perspective of, 'let's give it a go and we should start as soon as we can', because the price of it is not a concern," he explained.
Idealistic and Unrealistic
Several in the private teaching field who share those concerns.
Another CEO, chief executive of an educational organization, who provides individual instructors, stated that "the development of adopting dual cultures, or in fact, forming one's identity, is something that must be grown into, not manufactured."
He noted that he had relocated from Asia to the UK at the time of seven, and had been brought up experiencing and embodying both cultures. He progressed to be educated at the University of Cambridge.
"The concept that an individual can function as a representation of UK identity, an individual who can possibly impart the qualities of a British gentleman upon a 12-month-old child, seems to me naive and unfeasible," he stated.
"Based on my background, having a typically UK tutor from babyhood will will not instantly create the goal they hope for.
"I never had that kind of mentor, and yet I have been privileged enough to experience several of the opportunities they aspire for their son."
He stated: "The truth is, personal identity cannot be dictated from the outside influences; it must be chosen, and it must be internally driven."
Acquiring Englishness
Naturally, English culture is something Adam thinks can be educated β and commercialized.
"In my view the fact that the international society views us in this light is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
