During an initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” New York City, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an audacious beginning to his tenure.

A Historic Leader

The young figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.

Ignoring counsel to temper hopes, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Ideals

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a agenda promising:

• Free buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.

The Basic Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing city upkeep: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
