Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
