A minimum of 13 people perish and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the year before. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been running in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
